We are living in a very challenging era. A world without boundaries. Daily unlimited exposure to both good and bad things make it almost impossible for us to get ourselves totally away from many types of temptation that will lead into negative addiction. Modernisation and globalisation which are things that supposed to benefit us for the better on the other hand can do more harm than good if we misused and "misbenefited" them. Surrounded by these exciting things everywhere, it's not a surprise to see that most youngsters/youths today find reading as a boring activity. Many are not interested in reading anymore. If at all they do, they usually go for comics, cartoons, magazines of their favourite artists and etc. In short, most youths are willing to read anything except those books that fall into the category of "boring books". Ironically, the books that seem to be unattractive to them prove to be the ones that help them to become great man/woman in the future.
When I was a kid, I loved reading very much. I read all types of genre, from science fiction to art fiction, non-fiction and fictional stories, in BM and in English. I read at least 3 to 4 books a week. I got so addicted to reading that one day I "seludup keluar" some new books (not ready to be borrowed yet) from our Primary school's Pusat Sumber without getting permission from the librarian first. Since I was one of the AJKs of the school's PS and the key for the room was always with me...apalagi...dengan mudah, I did all the penyeludupan regularly....hehehe. But I didn't steal those books of course. After finished reading each one of them, I put them back into the box in the PS neatly and sealed it with adhesive tape...:D
As I'm getting older, I find it difficult not to love reading. My addiction to it has no cure. Until now, I still find reading books as the most exciting hobby in the world. Believe it or not, you can get 'high' through reading books, not in a cheap sense I mean but in a healthy and sacred way. Reading a right book with the right content can help to positively expand our brain/minds and inspire us to think big. It enriches our knowledge and knowledge makes us wise, wealthy and successful. I pity those teenagers today who'd rather choose to experience being high in a very desctrutive way like taking drugs, addicted to pornography, having multiple sexual relationship, etc. If only our youngsters/community love reading , I believe none of our anak2 muda will become beggars in KL/peninsular Malaysia and overseas. If only our community loves knowledge, I believe nothing can stop us from being a successful and useful individual in the society.
To parents, start fostering the interest in reading to your kids now. Guide them to go for encyclopedia, educational books, any books that can be helpful to develop their little minds. Youth, if you want to be a beautiful and handsome person inside and outside, spare time for reading those "boring books". To leaders, keep upgrading your knowledge through reading because rakyat nowadays are getting wiser than the day before.
Note: Novels of Love stories?...Do you think it's good to read this type of books?
